Since the pre-Roman period, a fortified settlement has existed on the hill where Carcassonne now stands. In its present form it is an outstanding example of a medieval fortified town, with its massive defences encircling the castle and the surrounding buildings, its streets and its fine Gothic cathedral. Carcassonne is also of exceptional importance because of the lengthy restoration campaign undertaken by Viollet-le-Duc, one of the founders of the modern science of conservation. Yet this medieval city offers every modern day facility for visitors and residents; a well-developed economic infrastructure, incentives for businesses, cultural activities for all revolving around the rich historic past as well as contemporary design and art… theatres, cinemas, quality sports facilities and an international airport offering regular connections to Ireland and the UK. The International Airport of Toulouse-Blagnac is 90 km away.
The 3 million visitors who stroll around this city in the heart of the Cathar country every year can also enjoy the beautiful natural site of the nearby Montagne Noire, the Corbières, the Canal du Midi, the famous wine trail (Minervois Corbières) and many other enchanting places under a sunny and warm climate. Our opinion:
Carcassonne is the second most visited historical site in France after the Mont Saint Michel and is at the heart of one of France’s most popular and sunniest regions: the Languedoc-Roussillon. This growing area still provides many good opportunities for property investment as prices remain quite reasonable for the time being.
La Résidence des Remparts in Carcassone is an affordable investment with a strong management company, offering an ideal combination of location and longevity, the two complementary ingredients required for a successful leaseback investment.
